Where the Schlei flows into the Baltic Sea

The port of Olpenitz was once an important base for the German Navy. When it was closed in the early 2000s, the former military area, where the Schlei flows into the Baltic Sea, was developed into one of the most exciting holiday resorts on the Schleswig-Holstein coast. Instead of warships, leisure crafts now anchor in the harbour and recreational travellers stroll along the shore.

 

Land reclamation widened the section where the holiday apartment is now located. This means you are literally holidaying on the Baltic Sea! A small beach is just steps away from the accommodation while south of the harbour basin, the wide Weidefelder Beach, with its fine sand, beckons.

In northern Schleswig-Holstein

Administratively, Olpenitz is part of the small town of Kappeln, which is situated in a picturesque inland location on the Schlei and is known for its drawbridge. Numerous waterfront restaurants and the charming old town invite you to linger. The area around the Schlei is considered one of the most idyllic landscapes in the whole of Schleswig-Holstein. An abundance of nature is an invitation to take long walks or bike rides. Due to its very northerly location, the sun sets particularly late in summer.

There are also many exciting destinations to discover in the surrounding area. For example, Schleswig, with its pretty town centre and harbour and especially Gottorf Castle. Then there is Flensburg, which has a slightly Danish feel. Also worth a visit are the moated castle of Glücksburg, the charming town of Eckernförde and the maritime-influenced state capital of Kiel. There is plenty to explore around Olpenitz!
